Steve has been playing guitar since 1970. He taught himself how to play by ear, and never really learned how to read music. Because of this, he developed a keen sense of sound and was able to try and emulate the music that he heard. Although he began writing music--"Well, I began writing music in my head, anyway", he says-- he never really tried to write any lyrics until he got into his twenties. But he says none of those lyrics stuck.

"Everytime I wrote lyrics, it seemed so contrived. Like it was just all cliches". He began writing lyrics and putting them to music as a novelty only. "I think I wrote maybe two or three songs that I'd consider half-way decent back then". Then, he says he just forgot about writing. But the nagging feeling about being creative kept bothering him.

One day in 1995, he was sitting in his room and really crying out to God and wondering why He gave him a great guitar talent and the ability to perform and share that, but didn't seem to give him the talent to write lyrics. The desire to give back to God in some way was really nagging at him. He tried to find some verses in the bible that might speak to him somehow. "Why, God, why??" And then the answer suddenly came. Not a lightning bolt or anything like that, he says, just a good eye-opener: "Because you're not writing about Me", God told him. "But You know how hard it is for me to write lyrics", says Steve. "You just worry about writing the music. I've already taken care of the lyrics", Steve hears as his eyes glance toward The Book. "There it is, then", Steve said. "Question answered. Petition heard".

The previous episode was the catalyst in writing and developing a list of songs from which to choose for his debut CD, Wisdom - Discovery of the Word. Some of the songs that remained from that original list, plus new writes, plus some songs from others are featured on his latest CD, Follow Him Home.

Steve founded Solid Walnut Music in 1995. Now, SWM a music publisher with over 50 songs in it's catalog, featuring songs from many different songwriters. The future looks very bright for all the songwriters involved.
